On Wednesday September 5, I accompanied a 19 year old teenager Ong Sing Yee to the Johor Bahru Central Police Station. She had earlier seen her photo and read in the China Press  that the police were looking for a number of people including her to assist the police who were investigating an incident at Dataran Merdeka on the night of Merdeka, where apparently some people had stepped on the photos of Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak and his wife Rosmah Mansor.

At the Johor Bahru Central police station, and where the initial questioning took place, I must acknowledge that the police treated her with decorum and professionalism. The police officer questioning her even asked me to buy her food and drinks. After her statement was taken, the police informed her that she is being investigated for committing an offence under s.4(1) of the Sedition Act and she was going to be brought to Kuala Lumpur for further investigation. I had earlier told her that she must be prepared for that the police will take her to Kuala Lumpur for further investigation. The police officers did inform her and me, that they will before taking her to Kuala Lumpur go to her house to retrieve the T-Shirt which she had worn during the night of the incident.

It has now come to my knowledge that, prior to taking her to Kuala Lumpur, she was then taken to the Johor Police Headquarters where she was further questioned and this time without the presence of any lawyer. Ong  Sing Yee hardly can speak a word of Malay or English. Apparently a statement was taken where she was being held at the Johor Police Headquarters, a police interpreter then translated her statement and she was asked signed her statement which she did. She certainly never had the opportunity to verify independently if her whole statement was translated to her or even accurately translated or the statement contained information which she had never said and those statements not read back to her. I stand corrected on this issue.

Ong Sing Yee is now being investigated under s.4 of the Sedition Act 1948. Under s.4, it is an offence for any person who does or attempt to any act which has or would have a seditious tendency.  Ong Sing Yee’s case, could a Malaysian first, where stepping on the prime minister photo and even worst his wife can now tantamount to a seditious act. Mischief making? Probably. Sedition? Surely not!

Nevertheless, it is agreeable that it is bad manners and uncouth behaviour to step on one’s photograph although it’s becoming the norm now days in Malaysia. No one condones what she did but the question is why only her and why only now. We have witnessed army personnel doing “butt exercise” against Ambiga. The Chief Minister of Penang Lim Guan Eng, his photo is trampled ever so regularly and there was an incident of some youths urinating on Tuan Guru Nik Aziz’s poster. Going by the police’s exuberance in charging Ong Sing Yee with committing sedition, surely the police must arrest and charge the perpetrators who did the same to Ambiga, Lim Guan Eng or Tuan Guru Nik Aziz. Or is it a case of different rules applying for different people.

Ong Sing Yee may have her own reasons who she stepped of the Prime Minister and Rosmah Mansor’s photos, but she has now apologised to the Malaysian public. Thus,  it’s time that the police discontinue further investigation on Ong Sing Yee. To pursue a case against Ong Sing Yee but being indifferent on cases involving people like Ambiga, Lim Guan Eng or Tuan Guru Nik Aziz would simply be construed as a case of vindictiveness, persecution and double standard.

Surely, the police can be forgiving and magnanimous and with Ong Sing Yee now having made an open apology to all Malaysians, which also includes the prime Minister and his wife,

Let the Malaysian public see this magnanimous side of the police.

THE AFRICAN MENACE CONTINUES.

The Star today reported that a Nigerian living like a king in his little palatial hideout in Lukut, Port Dickson was arrested by the police suspected of running a multi-million drug syndicate.

Here’s the news truncated :

• 32 year old Nigerian 
•  living a life of luxury in his bungalow house 
•  police investigation revealed that suspect been operating in this country for less than a year own a hotel in his home country paid for with the money gained from his illegal activities 
•  police seized two cars a BMW and a Toyota Camry.

 In all probability : 

• The African would have entered this country as a student 
• registered for English language or Business Administration foundation course 
•  the college would be a non descepit institution most likely mired in severe financial difficulty.

 Frankly, his is really a success story. Imagine in less than 6 months of arriving in this country he lives a life a life of luxury and could even buy a hotel back home cash.

I am not sure if Malaysia is fighting a losing battle against the African menace although the Malaysian public owes an immense gratitude to the Royal Malaysian Customs, particularly at KLIA for having hawk eyes in being able to spot and arrest these African drug traffickers. Still, I sometimes  wonder, for the best effort of our custom officers in arresting just one drug trafficker trafficker, how many other traffickers would have got away.

Last week, six people from Zambia, Iran and Nigeria were arrested in KLIA, Puchong and Damansara for drug smuggling with a street value of RM7 million. Last year, 154 Africans were arrested for drug trafficking and this year until April, 57 Africans have been arrested. Clearly, together with the Iranians, Africans have not only become a menace but a serious security threat.

The government has recently introduced certain measures to vet Africans who want to come to Malaysia to study but I believe the government should also vet througly and be really satisfied that any African arriving as a tourist is a genuine tourist. Draft a set of protocols which Africans need to satisfy and comply before they are allowed entry into the country.  If Sambo arrives at KLIA with a fresh passport and he prior to coming to Malaysia has never ever left his bush and arrives in Malaysia with US1,000 a return bus-ticket to Hadyai and the reason for coming to Malaysia is because he wants to see Petronas Twin Tower and gives an address in Puchong, just put him on the next flight back home.

Anyway, just received an email that the chap below is planning to come to Malaysia and enroll as a student in a local institution. Hope the authorities keep a watch for him. 

 

Nasruddin Hassan Nakbah Bagi Pakatan Rakyat.

Ketua Pemuda PAS, Nasruddin Hassan adalah nakbah yang telah melanda Pakatan Rakyat. Kadang-kadang benak hati saya bertanya jika si-kitul ini adalah kuda tunggangan Barisan Nasional atau makhluk yang diutuskan izazil untuk meranapkan  Pakatan Rakyat dan sekali gus impian PAS.

Siapa tidak tahu tentang Nasruddin Hassan yang dapat diharapkan untuk mengeluarkan nas-nas yang tak masuk akal. Ingat tentang kajian ilmiahnya yang menggegarkan Malaysia apabila beliau mengaitkan Hari Valentine dan Malam Tahun Baru sebagai punca pembuangan bayi. Juga tabiat peliknya yang gemar menggunakan perkataan "non" dan pantang menggunakan perkataan "bukan" bila merujuk kepada orang bukan Islam. Tapi geram saya kepadanya bukan kerana semua ini.

Betapa bezanya si- dia dengan Salahuddin Ayub yang tegas prinsip, terbuka untuk berbincang dan serdahana dalam bicara. Salahuddin berpijak di bumi realiti, jadi bila dia berkata sesuatu atau mengulas tentang sesuatu isu, Salahuddin berfikir dahulu sebelum bercakap. Berbeza ketara Salahuddin dengan foot-in-the mouth Nasruddin.

Nasruddin mungkin bodoh banggang untuk sedar bahawa setiap kali beliau buka mulut mengulas atau bercakap tentang hudud Pakatan Rakyat menjadi mangsa kebodohannya. Bukan itu sahaja, saudara-saudara saya seperti Sdr Syed Osman, Sdr Suhaizan Kayat, Sdr Mazlan Aliman, Sdr Zulkifli Ahmad, Sdr Rosli Kemin, Sdr Aminulhuda nescaya akan menerima tempias. Saya memanggil  mereka ini sebagai saudara, sebab persahabatan dan keakraban yang telah dibina sudah lebih sedekad. Kerana itulah, saya benar-benar mahu saudara-saudara saya ini dari PAS dan juga Sdr Salahuddin Ayub menang pilihanraya ini di Johor. Saya mahu melihat Sdr Salahuddin Ayub menjadi Menteri Besar Johor. Malangnya impian mereka mungkin akan dilenyapkan gara-gara perbuatan Nasruddin yang tidak tahu realiti politik Johor berbeza dengan Kelantan atau Trengganu.

Nasruddin Hassan bodoh sombong untuk menerima hakikat bahawa hudud tiada dalam dasar Pakatan Rakyat dan PAS pula bercakap tentang Negara Kebajikan. Yang asyik mengungkit-ungkitkan hudud ialah Nasruddin Hassan dan mereka yang sewaktu dan sealiran dengannya. Kalau dah dalam satu pakatan, pakatlah bersama untuk mencapai matlamat. Bukan sahaja Karpal Singh seorang tetapi DAP dalam Pakatan Rakyat tidak akan menerima perlaksanaan hudud. Saya percaya PKR pun sama. PAS pun kini bercakap tentang Negara Kebajikan, bukan tentang hudud. Hudud tiada dalam Common Policy Pakatan Rakyat. Jadi tak payahlah bangkit-bangkit.

Masalahnya bila Nasruddin Hassan cakap tentang hendak melaksanakan hudud, maka ia menjadi berita besar dalam suratkhabar Cina. Tambah dengan berita hukuman hudud di Afganistan seperti perempuan yang dikhabarkan telah melakukan zina ditembak mati, lelaki yang mencuri kaki dan tangannya diikat pada empat kuda yang diletak dalam arah bertentangan dan apabila seekor kuda di sebat sekali sahaja, bertempias larilah semua kuda sehingga berkecai kaki dan tangan dari badan. Inilah hudud yang digambarkan kerana orang Afganistan juga akan berpendapat inilah hudud biarpun dinafikan Nasruddin Hassan.

Nasruddin Hassan tidak sedar saudara-saudara saya jika hendak menang di Johor perlu undi kaum Cina. Permas, Kempas atau Pulai bukan seperti Marang atau Nilam Puri. Jadi apabila dalam suratkhabar Cina terpampang gambar kaki dan tangan yang berkecai dan tembak mati mengingatkan pengundi Cina bahawa  inilah yang menanti jika menggundi PAS dan Pakatan Rakyat, tidak mustahil pengundi Cina akan mula menjadi rimas dan mungkin membuat keputusan menggundi Barisan Nasional. Better the known devil than the unknown angel, bak kata orang putih.

Nasruddin Hassan yang bernafsu  timur tengah dan mungkin teringin melentur Malaysia dalam acuan ini, tidak berfikir bahawa Malaysia adalah negara majmuk dan hampir separuh rakyat Malaysia dari orang bukan Islam. Malangnya, Nasruddin Hassan tidak berpijak dibumi realiti. Nasruddin Hassan boleh cakap sampai kering tekak bahawa "non- muslim" (menggunakan gaya Nasruddin) tidak akan dikenakan hudud tapi orang bukan Islam tidak percaya dan malahan banyak soalan timbul yang sampai hari ini di sorok tidak dijawab kegusaran orang bukan Islam. Contoh, jika seorang Islam merogol seorang perempuan Cina memakai skirt. Apakah mangsa perlu beri keterangan di mahkamah syariah ? Jika perogol bawa saksi dan mangsa bawa saksi, adakah saksi orang Islam akan lebih dipercayai. Bukankah jika mangsa dan saksi hadir dimahkamah syariah, ini bererti mereka tunduk kepada mahkamah syariah? Bagaimana pula jika seorang Muslim masuk ke kedai arak kepunyaan orang Cina dan mencuri dan juga membinasakan botol-botol arak. Apakah hudud akan terpakai atau mahkamah akan menerima pembelaan mencegah mungkar dan melepaskan dia dari hukuman hudud. Banyak lagi kemuskilan dikalangan orang bukan Islam tentang hudud dan hakikatnya ialah mereka tidak akan menerima PAS atau Pakatan Rakyat jika melaksanakan hudud menjadi agenda. Lebih baik mereka menggundi BN.

Nasruddin juga perlu sedar bahawa orang bukan Islam tidak akan membeli hujahan dia bahawa hudud tidak akan dilaksanakan kepada orang bukan Islam bila pada tahun 1999 Tuan Guru Hadi Awang sendiri telah mengatakan secara terbuka hudud akan juga dipanjangkan kepada orang bukan Islam. Its on record.

Jadi, memandangkan PAS sudahpun mengguna-pakai istillah Negara Kebajikan, hudud  tiada dalam agenda Pakatan Rakyat dan juga tahu pandangan DAP, eloklah jika Nasruddin Hassan berhenti membangkitkan perlaksanaan hudud.

Jika Nasruddin Hassan masih ingin mewawarkan isu ini, maka PAS khususnya di Johor mesti bersedia untuk direjam oleh penggundi Cina dan DAP juga menerima hukuman kerana bersyubahat. Kita mahu PAS menang lebih di Johor, kita mahu DAP menang lebih banyak di Johor, kita mahu PKR pun untuk mengecap kemenangan. Kita mahu Pakatan Rakyat menang di Johor.

Justru itu dan memandangkan kita diambang pilihanraya, mesej lantang kepada Nasruddin Hassan ialah "Shut your freeking mouth" (cuba rujuk dalam kamus atau google untuk maksud). Belajar untuk bercakap dan bertindak sebagai satu pasukan untuk mencapai matlamat dan kemenangan. Terimalah apa yang telah dipersetujui dan diputuskan pimpinan pusat Pakatan Rakyat. Cuba. Jangan ranapkan Pakatan Rakyat.

INDIAN YOUTHS GET ADMITTED FOR GRASS CUTTING COURSES

For as long as I known, the grass cutters I have seen have been exclusively Indonesians. One can see them in the housing areas and sometimes along the roads and highways. You may have seen them, wearing a straw hat, face covered with a morning towel and sometimes wearing spectacles and cutting grass using the mobile grasscutter that looks like a simple contraption. I have yet to see an Indian grasscutter or ever known an Indian who has been given a prestigious grass cutting contract by the government or even the local authorities.

The Sun newspaper on Wednesday July, 12 published an interview with P. Kamalanathan, MIC’s Information Chief and Member of Parliament for Hulu Selangor where he answered a range of questions. This question really caught my eye.

How is MIC helping Indian youths ?

Answer by P. Kamalanathan.

“ In my constituency, we identified 240 Indian Youths and sent them to a college offering courses such as GRASS CUTTING, wiring etc…”

Isn’t it amazing to see that P. Kamalanathan and MIC  gushing with great pride for helping Indians become grasscutters. After 54 years of independence, empowering Indians as grasscutters is seen to be the height of achievement by MIC.

Singaporean businesswoman Rita Zahara was driving her family back to Singapore at about 1 am when she stopped near Jalan Tun Abdul Razak to buy fruits from a roadside stall, while her children and maid waited in the car. Two men armed with guns and knives hijacked her car. Intense negotiation with the criminals ensued and she eventually found her family safe in Ulu Tiram. The criminals escaped with her car and valuables.

Singaporean Affendi Mamat  was at a brightly lit petrol kiosk at Jalan Tebrau, Johor Bahru, just across the road from the police headquaters at 2 am, when two men got into his Hyundai Sonata and ordered him to drive. The robbers pointed a gun and a knife at him and ordered him to drive off where he was dumped with his hands tied at a road side near Kota Tinggi, some 140km away. The criminals escaped with his car.

Sin Min Daily News reported about Singaprean part-time tutor David Lim who was robbed at gunpoint in Perrmas Jaya Johor Bahru at 10.45pm when he met three men who appeared to be interested in buying the laptops he was selling online.

To digress a little, all the above cases involved Singaporeans. Malaysians too are victims of Johor Bahru crimes.  The Star newspaper July, 4  reported :

A bodyguard was shot fivetimes before robbers escaped with RM100,000 from a moneychanging outlet at Holiday Plaza, Johor Bahru.

Its been  a successful and prosperous July for criminals ! 

Anyway, coming back to the recent cases of Singaporeans who had fallen victims to criminals, last Saturday, the Johor police held a press conference to announce that they had arrested three suspects and recovered Rita Zahara’s Nissan Sunny. According to Johor CPO Dato Mokhtar Mohd Shariff, the three suspects were arrested in Felda Ulu Tebrau area and the police also seized a pump gun with three bullets, two pistols, one police badge, among aothers. Apparently this gang is believed to have been behind 14 other crimes in Johor, including vehicle theft, robbery and drug offences. Two other male suspects are still on the run.

At the press conference, Dato Mokhtar also released figures on the number of crimes against Singaporens :

2009                           :  413 cases

2010                           :  320 cases

2011                           : 400 cases

2012 ( Jan –June)      : 216 cases

(A simple interpretation of the statistics would reveal that ONE Singaporean is a victim of crime EVERY DAY in Johor Bahru ! )

The Johor Police must be commended for their quick action in apprehending the criminals and resolving the recent carjacking and attemted kidnapping case involving Rita Zahara and her family members. Dato Mohktar has described the criminals as “retarded and moronic “. Harsh words indeed. Still, what”s really needed are not merely harsh words but effective policing.

A few months ago, again after a wave of crimes particularly snatch-theft cases, there was a sudden visible presence of police in the city centre. In fact there was a visible presence of police walking the streets and particularly at bus-stops during the rush hours. There were even some temporary police post. Well, it would seem that they have all tapered off.

Perhaps, YDH Dato’ CPO Johor can for a start give statistics as to how many CCTV have been installed ( and of course functioning) in Johor Bahru year on year from 2008.

Also, how effective have the police “scrambler motorbike” unit been as a crime prevention unit. A general public description about this unit is “police joy-ridders”. 

If there are are any advice to give the police, it is to ask the police to increase and have more visible policing and police post at areas patronized by visitors particularly at Taman Pelangi, Taman Sentosa, Taman Suria, Tebrau City vicinity and Permas Jaya. All housing areas and Taman’s must be monitored by CCTV or “eye in the sky” and linked and monitored at the Johor Police headquarters.

Another thing which is causing concern to Johor Bahru residents are the influx of foreigners and questionable tourist in Johor Bahru. Some are even running their own busineses and petty trading. There is already a noticeable increase of Africans in Johor Bahru and believe me not all are students. Could the CPO perhaps direct the local authorities MBJB and MBJBT to make a mandatory requirement that house-owners renting rooms or their house to foreigners are compelled to lodge comprehensive details (including photograph) of their tenants with the local council and police station. Seeing the Afghan and Pakistani looking “tourist” in Johor Bahru, it would seem that they may be bidding time for their place on the boat to Australia and Johor is the cstagging post.

 At  Saturday’s  press conference Dato Mokhtar said “ There was a lot of publicity, This will affect the investment climate, the confidence of Singaporeans coming here. We don’t want all this”

To the Johor CPO, we Johor Bahru residents want a crime free Johor Bahru and the onus is on you to ensure that Johor Bahru is free from crime. Effective policing and not police statistics which gives comfort and peace of mind to Johor Bahru residents. When Lim Guan Eng made a comment (in fact years ago Lee Kuan Yew said the same) that one is more likely to be kidnapped or robbed in Johor Bahru, it riled up many and political opportunists took advantage to make numerous police reports against him. Was what he said was wrong or we speak in hush tone what Lim Guan Eng said in the open. Has Lim Guan Eng been proven to be wrong ? 

Finally, the life-blood of Johor Bahru economy are Singaporeans and some two million Singaporean residents visit Johor Bahru ever month. Taking RM500 per Singaporean spent in Johor Bahru, that is about RM 10 million per month from Singaporean visitors alone. That’s a lot of money. 

Surely, Johor Bahru deserves better security!
